Beavers have dammed up the area, and there is a nearby manmade moat that protected Battery Steele
The 300 foot long Battery Steele fortress, built in 1942, is the longest battery in the United States. It took close to 200 men to operate. Then it housed two Mark II battleship guns, the heaviest in the naval artillery at the time. These guns were capable of firing 16 inch diameter, 2000 pound shells, 25 miles away. A nearby plotting room was equipt with an early mechanical computer used to triangulate enemy position. Mines, nets, underwater microphones, and magnetic submarine detection equipment were deployed in Casco Bay to defend against German uboats. The German submarine U853 snuck through though and sunk the USS Eagle in 1945.

Emplacement and entrance
There is a lot of graffiti, some of it impressive
Inside the battery
There are a few dark, haunting rooms deep inside. Among some of the interesting items we found were a burned out mattress, a cross country ski, desk, and an open underground hatch that we were way too scared to go in.

Visiting the town of Cape Elizabeth
Portland Head Light is also known as Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse
There is a clifftop walkway called Marginal Way at Perkins Cove in Ogunquit
Along Marginal Way
One day it rained which is supposed to be good for fishing, I thought. Here is Perkins Cove and its drawbridge. I quickly fished a few docks this weekend but didn't catch anything.
